Year 2013. I received a friend request from a couple of names I have not heard in a long time: Paulina Aubey and Cédric Moulin. It took me a couple of days, yes – a couple of days – to realise who they were. Upon realisation, I obviously and excitedly accepted their friend requests, and we scheduled ourselves to speak on the phone that weekend. I learnt that they left Montreal in the winter of 2004, the same year I gave birth to my son. What’s the relevance of sharing this information? It shows how friendship thrives despite time and distance. How we feel about others can sometimes never be forgotten. How mundane acts can become eternal memories. BUT also because… I am proud to admit that I was immortalised through Cédric’s first book: Aller simple pour Montréal!
Fast forward 2019. I was able to reunite with them after missing my plane when heading back home from Barcelona. Instead of paying three times the price to go home (Montreal), why not use that fee to visit friends in Europe. It so happened that Pauline (the name she used when we were working at The Bay in Downtown Montreal) had a vernissage (art exhibition) in her now hometown, Orléans, Friday of the week I contacted them.
Summer 2022: I have decided to start a blog about entrepreneurs in my circle. But only in spring of this year I was able to reach out to Cédric. It turned out to be a great timing. Here’s why…
HOW IT ALL STARTED
Rhunah Soriano (RS): Nice to see you again, Cédric! It is a great honour to talk to you about what have you been up to. First, how did it all start? What prompted you to start writing? Why? I was aware that you were unhappy being in Canada because you missed your family and friends. Are there more reasons? The weather? The culture?
Ravie de vous revoir, Cédric ! C’est un grand honneur de vous parler de ce que vous avez fait. Tout d’abord, comment tout cela a-t-il commencé ? Qu’est-ce qui vous a poussé à commencer à écrire ? Je sais que vous étiez malheureux d’être au Canada et que votre famille et vos amis vous manquaient. Mais y a-t-il d’autres raisons ? La météo ? La culture ?
Cédric Moulin (CM): I started writing a few years after living in Montreal. My Canadian residency led me to deep reflection on the choices we make in life and their impact. In Montreal, I lived in relative austerity and a certain solitude. Books, then, took on an even more significant role than when I was living in France. I used to go to the library and to the many bookstores in Montreal. On my return to France, I began to write down my memories to ultimately form an autobiographical book that I self-published in 2011.
J’ai commencé à écrire après avoir vécu quelques années à Montréal. Ma résidence canadienne m’a mené vers une réflexion profonde, sur les choix que l’on fait dans la vie et sur leur incidence. À Montréal, je vivais dans un dépouillement relatif et une certaine solitude; les livres ont alors pris une place encore plus significative que lorsque je vivais en France. J’avais pris l’habitude de me rendre à la bibliothèque et dans les nombreuses librairies de Montréal. A mon retour en France, j’ai commencé à consigner mes souvenirs par écrit pour, au final, former un livre autobiographique que j’ai autopublié en 2011.
CM: As I said in the previous question, it is undoubtedly my Canadian residency that pushed me towards introspection and writing. I would not say that I was unhappy in Canada. I lived through difficult times there because I had left my country without a real immigration project. I was a young adult, and I probably got a little lost. Admittedly, the distance caused, after a while, homesickness, but the decision to leave Canada to return to live in France was not easy. It was a huge dilemma, and my return to homeland wasn’t easy either. But that’s what I described in the book. Otherwise, I don’t think the weather and the culture made it difficult for me.
Comme je l’ai dit dans la question précédente, c’est sans doute ma résidence canadienne qui m’a poussé vers l’introspection et l’écriture. Je ne dirais pas que j’étais malheureux au Canada. J’y ai vécu des moments difficiles parce que j’avais quitté mon pays sans véritable projet d’immigration. J’étais jeune adulte, et je me suis sans doute un peu perdu. Certes, l’éloignement a engendré, au bout d’un moment, le mal du pays, mais la décision de quitter le Canada pour revenir vivre en France n’a pas été facile: c’était un énorme dilemme, et mon retour en terre natale n’a pas été évident non plus… Mais ça, c’est ce que je décrits dans le livre. Sinon, je ne pense pas que la météo et la culture m’aient rendu la vie difficile.
HOW IS IT GOING
RS: How many books in total have you authored and/or co-authored? Which one is most fun and which one is most challenging? Why?
Combien de livres au total avez-vous écrits et/ou co-écrits ? Lequel est le plus amusant et lequel est le plus difficile ? Pourquoi ?
I founded Les Éditions Moulin, which currently have seventeen books in the catalogue, divided into four collections. In the next two years, we will publish eight other publications. All this, between the authors, illustrators and proofreaders, involves around forty people. I am personally the author and co-author of eleven titles out of the seventeen currently in the catalogue. The funniest to write were those based on the works of the artist, Jacques Thuillier. He gave me the mission to write sci-fi stories through his drawings. I had a lot of fun getting into this work, which was the combination of:
(1) constraint – organising the drawings to allow them to tell a story, and
(2) creativity – inventing a coherent story from these same drawings.
I had to take into account every idea, every detail. As for the most demanding work, it was undoubtedly that of the anthologies. On the one hand, the collection of short stories by role-players from Orleans, which had to be proofread and corrected, then assembled and laid out, and on the other hand, the anthology on which I am working this year. We have launched a call for texts on the theme of the Odyssey. The work consists of selecting, correcting and publishing an anthology of around twenty texts by different authors. It involves a lot of people and takes a lot of work.
J’ai fondé les Éditions Moulin qui comptent à ce jour dix-sept livres au catalogue, répartis en quatre collections. Dans les deux années à venir, nous éditerons huit autres publications. Tout ceci – entre les auteurs, illustrateurs, relecteurs, correcteurs – implique une quarantaine de personnes. Je suis personnellement auteur et co-auteur de onze titres sur les dix-sept actuellement au catalogue. Les plus amusants à écrire ont été ceux d’après les œuvres de l’artiste Jacques Thuillier. Il m’a confié ce travail : écrire des histoires de SF d’après ses dessins. J’ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à me lancer dans ce travail qui était l’alliance de la contrainte (organiser les dessins pour leur permettre de raconter une histoire) et de la créativité (inventer une histoire cohérente d’après ces mêmes dessins). Il m’a fallut prendre en compte chaque contenu, chaque détail. Quand au travail le plus exigeant, cela a sans doute été celui des anthologies. D’une part, les recueils de nouvelles des rôlistes orléanais (qu’il a fallut relire et corriger, puis assembler et mettre en page), et d’autre part l’anthologie sur laquelle je travaille cette année (nous avons lancé un appel à texte sur le thème de l’odyssée). Le travail consiste à sélectionner, corriger et publier une anthologied’une vingtaine de textes d’auteurs différents. Cela implique beaucoup de personnes et demande un travail considérable.
RS: Which is the best selling? Why do you think it is successful? What is the plot?
Lequel est le plus vendu ? Selon vous, qu’est-ce qui est fructueux ? Quelle est l’intrigue ?
CM: My most popular book is undoubtedly, and by far, Aller simple pour Montréal. I promoted it on the web, and in particular, on a specialised forum when the impact of the networks was real. Nowadays, saturation and weariness make it much more difficult to reach people, feedback decreased dramatically. But beyond this aspect, it is also the subject that is appealing: Going to Canada is a dream for any French. These words make a lot of people shiver!
Mon livre le plus populaire est indiscutablement, et de loin, Aller simple pour Montréal. J’en ai fait la promotion sur le Web, et notamment sur un forum spécialisé, au moment où l’impact des réseaux était réel. De nos jours, la saturation et la lassitude fait qu’il est bien plus difficile d’atteindre les gens ; les rendements sont décroissants. Mais au-delà de cet aspect, c’est aussi le sujet qui plait : partir au Canada, un rêve pour les Français. Ces mots font frissonner pas mal de gens !
RS: Any book that needed to be retracted due to politics?
Un livre qui a dû être retiré à cause de la politique ?
I have never published any controversial book. On the other hand, I have to discard certain texts that I receive as part of the Odyssey anthology because they address or register themes that could cause problems.
Je n’ai jamais publié d’ouvrage polémique. Je suis en revanche obligé d’écarter certainstextes que je reçois dans le cadre de l’anthologie Odyssée, car ils abordent des thèmes ou sont sur un registre qui pourraient causer problème.
RS: Which book is the easiest to write, why? Which one is the most difficult, why?
Quel livre est le plus facile à écrire, pourquoi ? Lequel est le plus difficile, pourquoi ?
The easiest thing is to write about yourself or about current events – the reality.
The hardest part is fiction: inventing, starting from “nothing.” It interests me a lot, but this is also the most difficult thing to do. Creativity is the expression of freedom in action. I pay particular attention to freedom, an essential value, which is, I find, stifled by judgment, fear… fear of others. I would like people to allow themselves to be creative, rather than conforming to established models, to the injunctions to live in such a way, and to invest their energy in creation rather than in consumption.
Le plus facile est d’écrire sur soi, ou sur l’actualité, la réalité.
Le plus difficile reste la fiction. Inventer, partir de «rien», est ce qui m’intéresse, mais ce qui est aussi le plus difficile. La créativité est l’expression de la liberté en action. J’apporte une attention particulière à la liberté, valeur essentielle, qui est, je trouve, étouffée par le jugement, la peur, la crainte des autres. J’aimerais que les individus s’autorisent à être créatifs plutôt que de se conformer à des modèles établis, aux injonctions à vivre de telle manière et investissent leur énergie dans la création plutôt que dans la consommation.
RS: Which book received the best review, yet you didn’t anticipate to get that much attention? What surprised you about it?
Le livre qui a reçu les meilleures critiques, mais vous ne vous attendiez pas à attirer autant d’attention ? Qu’est-ce qui vous a surpris à ce sujet ?
The sci-fi universe website has published a mostly positive review for each book of Les Bâtisseurs de Rêves. The journalist took the time of summarising and commenting on each short story and revealing his prize list. Otherwise, the first book written after the drawings of Jacques Thuillier, Cosmos, was also very well-received; and the reviews were very good. It also has the surprise effect: the “novelty” side, which acts at first and does not happen again when there is a sequel.
Le site Web Scifi-universe a publié une chronique pour chaque recueil des Bâtisseurs de Rêves dans laquelle la critique est plutôt positive. Le journaliste s’est donné le mal de résumer et de commenter chaque nouvelle, et de dévoiler son palmarès. Sinon, le premier livre écrit d’après les dessins de Jacques Thuillier, Cosmos, a aussi été très bien reçu et les critiques étaient très bonnes. C’est aussi l’effet de surprise, le côté «nouveauté», qui agit et ne se reproduit pas lorsqu’il y a une suite.
RS: What is the most recent book you are promoting? Tell me the plot. Was there an incident in your life that inspired you to write it?
Quel est le livre le plus récent dont vous faites la promotion ? Dites-moi l’intrigue. Y a-t-il eu un incident dans votre vie qui vous a inspiré à l’écrire ?
CM: Our next book is called Sacrifiés – a fantasy novel written by Romain Lecomte, one of our confirmed authors. Romain develops a complex world in which antagonistic people prepare to fight each other. He describes particularly well the characters, with fine psychology, who develop strategies of genius. It is scholarly and very well-written. The text will be released this summer.
Le livre sur lequel la promotion va être soutenue est «Sacrifiés», un roman de fantasy écrit par Romain Lecomte, l’un de nos auteurs confirmé. Romain y développe un monde complexe dans lequel des peuplades antagonistes s’apprêtent à se livrer bataille. Il y décrit particulièrement bien les personnages, à la fine psychologie, qui élaborent des stratégies degénie. C’est érudit et très bien écrit. Le texte sortira cet été.
